In Istanbul, all buildings built before 2000 will be checked. This decision was made by the City Municipality (IMM) after the devastating earthquake in February this year. All homes over 23 years old will be tested free of charge for earthquake resistance and compliance with regulations. A special department has already begun to conduct inspections. If a house is found to be inconsistent with safety standards, it will be demolished and a new one built. Some of the potentially dangerous buildings have already been identified, the residents have been relocated to a new fund.

Recall that in 2000 new construction standards were developed, that allow buildings to withstand even a strong earthquake with a magnitude of up to 8 points. Over these 23 years, the standards have been refined and improved, so the younger the building, the more reliable it is.
