Turkey’s Ministry of Transport plans to build new railroads and roads. These roads will carry cargoes to Iraq, East Asia, India and Europe. According to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey, investments of $7.8 billion have already been planned for the construction. In general, the “Development Road” project will cost Turkey and Iraq $23 billion.
Tenders have already been held among companies for the construction of railroads and highways. It is known that about $2 billion will be invested in the 320-kilometer highway between Şanlıurfa and Ovakey. $5.8 billion will also be allocated for the 615-kilometer railroad between Gaziantep and Ovakey.
The implementation of the Development Road project will relieve the transportation tension from the congested Suez Canal. Thanks to the project, a direct route from the Persian Gulf to Turkey will be built. The new highways will connect the republic with Basra, Baghdad and Mosul in Iraq. These three cities are considered tourist centers. They have a rich history of development.
The Development Road project is scheduled to be completed in 2029.
