Turkey may take the second place after Spain in the field of medical tourism. The country may displace France, pushing it to the third place. The government of the Republic of Turkey is actively working to attract as many patients as possible from all over the world. The country’s goals include increasing medical tourism revenues to $3 billion.
Medical tourism figures began to grow last year. Then Turkey received a record 1.2 million medical tourists. This is almost double the number of medical tourists in 2021. Revenues from medical tourism in 2022 rose to $2.1 billion, which is $400 thousand more than in the previous year. An increase in tourists coming to Turkey for medical treatment is also noted in 2023. In the first 6 months, 746.3 thousand foreigners were treated in the country. The industry’s income from health tourism has already exceeded $1 billion.
According to International Health Services Inc. (USHAŞ), the most preferred clinical branches for foreign patients are: gynecology, ophthalmology, medical biochemistry, general surgery, dentistry, orthopedics and trauma.
Ankara alone is expected to serve 24% of international medical tourists in 2024. That’s more than 500,000 patients and over $750 million in revenue.
